How deep are my roots? Am I an annual, here for a season but not establishing roots that will withstand the toughest drought? I would have to admit that I am coming out of a season that I was wilting, demanding, and not very attractive. Certainly not looking like my roots were very established. I am committing myself to take those roots deeper, preparing myself for the next season, whatever it may bring.
Summer in Texas this year has been a scorcher! We are on our billionth (it seems like!) day of 100 degree heat and again promises to be over 100 degrees today without so much as a dribble of rain! I have thrown so much water on my dying for thirst flowers and yet they still look pathetically thirsty! After consulting the experts it appears that the root structure is weak…that the roots don’t go very deep, that they are in fact shallow. When they encounter drought, the flowers that were so beautiful and lush and easy to please in the spring have become dried up, barely surviving, shriveled up, cantankerous, not so enjoyable! I guess there is a reason they are called “annuals”.
